Professional Development (PD) Coordinator

Location: Yellowknife

Job: The successful candidate will report for work five (5) days a week. The position may become 80% (4 days a week) in July 2021 dependent on operational requirements.

Salary and benefits: A competitive salary, a full range of benefits and an attractive summer vacation package are included. Professional Development will be provided as part of the position as well.

Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association (NWTTA) Background Information

The NWTTA is a professional organization of 800+ educators, from three distinct bargaining units (Government of the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife Catholic Schools and Yellowknife Education District No. 1), who work with the Northwest Territories’ publicly funded school system. The Central Professional Development Committee (CPDC) is a committee composed of two NWTTA-appointed representatives and two GNWT-appointed representatives. The CPDC oversees the work of the PD Coordinator. The PD Coordinator will be directly supervised by the NWTTA Executive Director.

The PD Coordinator is the main contact for teachers looking to improve their professional knowledge through training and coursework.

The PD Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and regulating the GNWT NWTTA Professional Development Fund initiatives according to the provisions outlined in Article 16 of the current GNWT Collective Agreement.


The role of the Professional Development Coordinator will include, but not be limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • Coordinating CPDC meetings
  • Coordinating information to members and the CPDC on the GNWT Professional Development Fund
  • Acting as Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF) Professional Development representative and contact for NWTTA
  • Responding to Professional Development inquiries
  • Maintaining and distributing current conference listings
  • Contributing regularly to NWTTA newsletter
  • Approving applications and PD reimbursements for Distance Education Credit, Summer Credit, Summer Non-Credit courses, Indigenous Language Funding and Educational Leadership Program funding subject to the approved budget
  • Distribution of information for Project Overseas
  • Implementing the selection process for Education Leave initiative
  • Preparing Education Leave documents - initial offers, contracts, pay adjustments letters, removal arrangements etc.
  • Acting Lead for NWT Educators’ Conference Planning Committee
  • Ensuring the yearly audit takes place
  • Working with each Regional Professional Development Committee to track approvals, reimbursements and regional trends

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Through a combination of training, expertise and/or qualifications, the Professional Development Coordinator will have:

  • English oral and written skills of the highest order
  • Proficiency in French will be considered an asset
  • High degree of organizational skills
  • Ability to work with people in a tactful and effective manner
  • Time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to become fluent with the collective agreement between the Government of the Northwest Territories and the NWTTA, as well as the policies and procedures of the CPDC
  • Thorough understanding of annual budgets and ability to understand financial reporting
  • Knowledge and experience with education systems
  • Understanding of roles and responsibilities of teachers and principals

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by: An Education Degree, Eligibility for a NWT Teachers’ certificate and at least five (5) years experience as a teacher. While priority may be given to those with a B.Ed. degree and teaching experience, equivalencies will be considered.
